Mastering the NSW Selective Writing Test (2026-2027) The Vivo S.T.A.R.T. Method

Introduction

For many Year 6 students and their parents, the Writing component of the NSW Selective High School Placement Test is the most stressful part of the day.

Unlike the multiple-choice sections for Math or Thinking Skills, writing can feel "random." You don't know the topic until the screen turns on, and you only have 30 minutes to plan, write, and check a complete piece of work.

At Vivo Education, we want to take the "mystery" out of writing. We believe that with a clear system, any student can turn a blank screen into a high-scoring response.

Why the Writing Test is a "Game Changer"

In the 2026-2027 test, Writing makes up 25% of the total score. That is the same weight as Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, and Thinking Skills!

Because writing is often where students struggle most with time, a strong, well-organized response can significantly boost your child’s overall ranking. It is the perfect place to stand out from the crowd.

The "Rules of the Race"

Before we talk about strategy, let’s look at the facts:

  • Total Time: 30 minutes (Strict).
  • The Task: One extended response based on a "stimulus" (an image, a quote, or a scenario).
  • The Format: Computer-based (no spell-check or autocorrect).
  • Target Length: 300–400 words (quality over quantity).

The Vivo "S.T.A.R.T." Planning Framework

The biggest mistake students make is "typing before thinking." If you start typing the second the clock starts, you will likely run out of ideas halfway through.

At Vivo Education, we teach our students the S.T.A.R.T. method—a disciplined 5-minute planning routine that makes the next 25 minutes of writing effortless.

1. S – Scan & Sense (1 Minute)

Don’t just read the prompt; sense the mood. Is the image lonely? Is the quote inspiring? Is the scenario a mystery? Identifying the "vibe" helps you choose the right words later.

2. T – Target your Text Type (30 Seconds)

The test doesn't just ask for a "story." You might need to write a Letter, a Speech, a News Report, or a Review. At Vivo, we prepare students for 11 different text types. Pick your format immediately and stick to it!

3. A – Assemble the "Big 3" (2 Minutes)

Don’t write full sentences yet. Just jot down the three main "beats" of your piece. If it's a story, what are the three main events? If it's a persuasive piece, what are your three strongest arguments?

4. R – Route the Flow (1 Minute)

How will you get from one paragraph to the next? Quickly choose your "bridge words" (e.g., However, Consequently, Furthermore). This creates the "flow" that examiners love to see.

5. T – Think the "Hook" (30 Seconds)

Visualize your very first sentence. Having a strong "opening hook" ready to go gives you the confidence to start typing at full speed the moment the planning is done.

The 12-Week Roadmap to a High Score

Success doesn't happen overnight. At Vivo Education, we recommend a structured approach:

  • Weeks 1-3 (Foundations): Master paragraph structure and build a "Word Bank" of 10 high-level words per week.
  • Weeks 4-6 (The Toolbox): Practice writing in different formats (News Reports, Speeches, Narratives).
  • Weeks 7-9 (The Clock): Start timed practice. Begin with 40 minutes and work your way down to the 30-minute limit.
  • Weeks 10-12 (Peak Performance): Full simulations on a computer. Practice typing with zero help and zero distractions.

What’s Coming Next?

A great plan is only the beginning. But what do you actually write when the computer asks for a "News Report" or a "Letter to the Editor"?

In Post 2: The Text-Type Toolbox, we will reveal the 11 different styles your child needs to know and provide our "Recipe Book" for mastering each one.

In Post 3: The Scoring Edge, we will look at the marking criteria: what do examiners really want, and how can your child's typing speed help (or hurt) their score?

Vivo Practice Challenge: Sit down with your child tonight. Show them a picture from a news website and see if they can use the S.T.A.R.T. method to plan a response in under 5 minutes.

Stay tuned for Part 2!
